Breathe

“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

Job 33:4

Meditation

Breathe. Just breathe. What you are experiencing in this moment has been made possible by your magnificent Creator. You have never taken one breath apart from Jesus. Not one.

Unfortunately, breath is one of the greatest gifts to take most easily for granted. Given your constant need of it, you probably go about your days either forgetting—or failing to recognize—God’s hand in it. But without your breath, what would you have? What would you be doing right now without this simple, sacred hum of life filling your chest?

Scripture is filled with this reminder. It is God’s breath that has animated your life, just as it is His breath that can take it away (Genesis 2:7; 2 Thessalonians 2:8). Every breath has been graciously given to you by the Giver of all good gifts (Acts 17:24-28). You are unable to do anything without Jesus Christ—and that includes your breathing (John 15:5). As a result, doing nothing apart from Him begins with your faith and gratitude for the very oxygen you are receiving in this moment. However elementary this practice may seem, thankfulness for your breath is a profound act of spiritual worship (Psalm 150:6).

Inhale. Hold it there for one moment, close your eyes, and thank God for His very presence in that single, quiet breath. Exhale. Let go of your concerns for tomorrow, even today. Inhale. Silently call on the name of Jesus, abiding in Him as the true Vine. Exhale. Still your mind and eliminate every other thought. Inhale. Feel the sacred breath of God, His Spirit, fill and indwell you. Exhale. Consider honestly, what else matters above or beyond Jesus?

Excerpt*

As we behold these words with our eyes, understand them with our minds, and enjoy the breath that God has afforded each one of us, we should become assured that everything we have—absolutely everything—is nothing more than a result of divine providence (Genesis 2:7). Not only can we do nothing, but we would be nothing were it not for Jesus.

Action

Spend five minutes solely focused on the calm activity and sound of your breath. In every inhale, contemplate an aspect of Christ’s beauty. In every exhale, put away any thoughts that distract and discourage you from pursuing His presence.

Reflection

What basic gifts of God do you regularly take for granted?
